When you first decide to improve your English, you have made the biggest step.

The next steps should be small. In English, we have a saying:

“Don’t run before you can walk.”

So, if you are new to learning English, or returning after a break, go slowly.

Here are some tips for those first small steps:

  1. Try to practice one day a week for the first month.
  2. Spend no longer than 20 minutes practising.
  3. Keep an informal diary about your learning. Record what you did, when and for how long.
  4. Write down any new words you come across. You can practice these later on.
  5. Give yourself a treat after your weekly 20 minute practice.
  6. Take a rest before the small steps turn into big ones!
